In-room massage in Bangkok: what to expect, step by step

7 minute read Updated 26 September 2026
What a Soul Treats therapist brings to your room: a tote bag, two bottles of massage oil and a jar of Thai herbal balm on the bed
Quick answer

Expect a professionally trained therapist at your door about 40 minutes after booking, wearing the brown Soul Treats Bangkok uniform and carrying the massage oils and balm. There is no portable table to carry in: the massage happens on your own bed, so there is nothing to set up. Clear the bed, dim the lights, wear something loose and you are ready.

  • Your therapist brings the oils and balm. The massage happens on your own bed.
  • Clear the bed, dim the lights, set the air conditioning a little warmer, silence your phone.
  • Wear loose clothes for Thai. For oil treatments you stay covered by the bed sheet.
  • Price confirmed before she sets off, free cancellation up to 1 hour before.

What does a massage therapist bring to a hotel room?

She brings the massage oils and balm, and that is all the session needs. Your therapist arrives in the brown Soul Treats uniform, places the oils and balm on the bedside table, and the massage takes place on your own bed. For our Signature scrub and coconut cream treatment she also brings the scrub and the coconut cream, and you rinse off in your own shower between the two.

If you have read elsewhere that a therapist will arrive with a portable table and bedding, that is not how Soul Treats works. There is no portable table to carry in and nothing to unfold or assemble, so the first minutes after she knocks are spent talking about what you would like, not setting up equipment. What she carries is small: the oils for Oil Relaxation, Aromatherapy and Coconut Oil treatments, and warm Thai herbal balm, which many guests enjoy on tired shoulders. For traditional Thai massage she uses no oil at all, just palm and thumb pressure and assisted stretches.

All our therapists are women, professionally trained in traditional Thai massage, oil massage and aromatherapy. If you enjoyed a session with someone before, for example Alice, Lina or Nana, you can ask for her by name when you book, subject to availability.

Why is the massage on my own bed, and is there enough space?

Because your own bed is the most comfortable place in the room, and it means the massage can begin almost as soon as your therapist arrives. A standard hotel or condo bed gives her enough room to work.

Working on the bed you already sleep in has some real advantages:

  • No set-up time. Nothing has to be carried up, unfolded or packed away, so the time you booked is time spent on the massage.
  • No noise. There is no equipment clattering along the corridor or being dragged across the floor, which matters late at night in a quiet hotel.
  • A familiar bed. You are lying somewhere you already feel at ease, in a room at the temperature you chose.
  • Straight to sleep. When the session ends you do not have to climb down, get dressed or move anywhere. Many guests are asleep soon after the door closes.

For Thai massage she works on the bed beside you, kneeling to apply palm pressure and guiding each stretch. For oil treatments she works from the side of the bed. A double, queen or king bed is ideal, and a smaller bed works well as long as there is room to move along at least one side. If two of you are sharing a room, two therapists can come at the same time: tell us the room type when you book, for example one king bed or two beds, and we confirm the set-up before they set off.

How should I get my room ready for an in-room massage?

Five minutes is plenty. Clear the bed, dim the lights, set the air conditioning a little warmer and silence your phone.

  • Clear the bed. Move laptops, shopping bags and spare cushions, and fold back a heavy duvet or bed cover so you are lying on the sheet.
  • Leave space on the bedside table. That is where the oils and balm go during the session.
  • Dim the lights. A bedside lamp is enough. Bright overhead lights are hard to relax under when you are lying face up.
  • Set the air conditioning a little warmer. Bangkok rooms are often kept very cool, and the body cools further as it relaxes, so a degree or two above your usual setting keeps you comfortable.
  • Silence your phone. Put the do-not-disturb sign on the door too, so nobody knocks halfway through.
  • Keep water nearby. A glass on the bedside table is welcome afterwards.

Booking for the evening? Ask housekeeping to service your room earlier in the day, so the bed is fresh and nobody knocks during your massage.

What should I wear, and should I shower before and after?

For Thai massage, wear loose, comfortable clothes such as a T-shirt and soft trousers or shorts. For oil treatments, you stay covered by the bed sheet throughout, apart from the area being worked on.

Thai massage uses no oil, so your clothes stay on for the whole session. Avoid jeans, belts and anything with a stiff waistband, because the stretches move your hips and legs quite a lot, and take off watches and chunky jewellery. For an oil treatment, wear whatever you are comfortable in under the sheet. Only the area your therapist is working on is uncovered, then covered again before she moves on, and a hotel bathrobe is handy for the moments before and after.

A quick warm shower before your therapist arrives is a pleasant way to begin, especially after a humid day walking around Siam or Chatuchak, but it is not required. After an oil massage, some guests rinse off straight away, while many leave the oil on, go to sleep and shower in the morning. Both are fine. It also helps not to eat a heavy meal in the hour before you begin.

Will massage oil mark the bed?

Any oil can leave a light trace on fabric, so our therapists apply it with care and use only as much as the massage needs. If you would rather have no oil at all, choose Traditional Thai, which uses none.

In a hotel the sheets are changed and laundered as a matter of routine, so a little oil is nothing housekeeping has not seen before. In your own condo or home, you may prefer to lay an older sheet over your bed before the session, which takes a minute and removes any worry. Herbal balm is also applied sparingly, and it leaves a gentle herbal scent that many guests like.

Choosing between the two styles? Oil Relaxation massage uses long, flowing strokes with warm oil and is the easiest way to switch off before sleep, from THB 900 for 60 minutes. Traditional Thai, from THB 800, suits guests who want stretching and firmer pressure, and it leaves the bed exactly as it was.

What happens from booking to goodbye?

You send one message, we confirm the price, your therapist arrives about 40 minutes later, and after a short chat about pressure the massage begins. Here is the whole visit, step by step.

The chat is worth a moment. Tell her how firm you like the pressure, where you feel tight, perhaps shoulders after a long flight or calves after a day on foot, and any area you would like her to avoid. If you have an injury or a medical condition, check with a doctor before booking and mention it here. You can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any point.

Arrival times depend on traffic, and heavy rain can slow the roads, but within 7 km of Sukhumvit Soi 22 there is no travel charge. That covers in-room massage across Sukhumvit from Nana and Asok to Phrom Phong and Thong Lo, as well as Silom, Sathorn, Pratunam and the Riverside. Every treatment and length is on our massage price list. Tips are optional and never added to the price, and if your plans change, cancellation is free up to 1 hour before the booked start time.

What should I tell hotel reception?

Let the front desk know you are expecting a massage therapist from Soul Treats, and send us the name the room is booked under and your room number.

Many Bangkok hotels ask visitors to register at reception, and keycard lifts are common, so a quick word in advance means she can be sent straight up rather than waiting while the desk calls your room. In a condo or serviced apartment, tell the lobby security or the juristic office, or come down to meet her at the lift. Our guide to in-room massage at Bangkok hotels covers the front desk in more detail, and if you want to know what a professional arrival looks like, read how to book a safe in-room massage in Bangkok.

Frequently asked questions

Does the therapist bring a portable table for an in-room massage?

No. Soul Treats Bangkok therapists bring the massage oils and balm, and the massage takes place on your own bed, so there is nothing to carry in or set up. That means no set-up time and no noise in the corridor, and when the session ends you can stay exactly where you are and go to sleep.

Will massage oil stain the sheets in my hotel room?

Any oil can leave a light trace on fabric, so our therapists apply it with care and use only what the massage needs. Hotel sheets are laundered routinely, and at home you can lay an older sheet over the bed first. If you would rather avoid oil entirely, Traditional Thai massage uses none, from THB 800 for 60 minutes.

Is a small hotel bed big enough for an in-room massage?

Usually, yes. A double, queen or king bed gives your therapist plenty of room, and a smaller bed works well when there is space to move along at least one side. Clear the bed and the bedside table before she arrives. If two of you are booking, tell us the room type and we confirm the set-up in advance.

Can I cancel an in-room massage if my plans change?

Yes. Cancellation is free up to 1 hour before the booked start time. Message us on the same channel you used to book, whether WhatsApp, LINE, Telegram or WeChat. If you would rather move the session to a different time, ask and we will check what is available that day.

Will my in-room massage therapist be a woman?

Yes. All Soul Treats Bangkok therapists are women, professionally trained in traditional Thai massage, oil massage and aromatherapy. You can ask for a favourite therapist by name when you book, for example Alice, Lina or Nana, subject to availability. She arrives in the brown Soul Treats uniform with the oils and balm.
