Bangkok hotel visitor rules: what reception asks when your therapist arrives

Quick answer

Most Bangkok hotels are happy for a massage therapist to visit a guest's room, as long as reception knows who she is visiting. Expect her to stop at the front desk, give your name and room number, and sometimes show ID or wait while reception calls your room. Telling the front desk in advance makes the arrival quick.

  • Most hotels allow visitors; reception just needs your name and room number.
  • Some hotels ask visitors for ID or call the room before sending them up.
  • Key-card lifts are common, so be ready to come down if needed.
  • A quick word with reception when you book saves a phone call.

Can a massage therapist come up to my hotel room in Bangkok?

In most hotels, yes. In-room massage is common in Bangkok, and hotels are used to visitors coming up to guests' rooms during the day and evening. What each hotel wants is to know who is in the building, so the procedures below are about security, not about the massage itself.

Rules vary from one hotel to the next, and a few hotels have their own in-house spa and prefer guests to use it. If you are unsure, the simplest step is to ask the front desk when you check in, or send them a short message before your booking.

What will reception ask my therapist?

Usually just who she is visiting. These are the common practices in Bangkok hotels, and our therapists are used to all of them:

  • Your name and room number. Reception checks that the guest is staying there before giving directions to the lift.
  • ID for the visitor log. Some hotels record visitors' ID cards, and a few keep the card at the desk until the visitor leaves. It is standard practice and nothing to worry about.
  • A call to your room. Many hotels phone the room before letting anyone up, so keep your phone or the room phone within reach around the arrival time.
  • A key-card lift. In many hotels the lifts only work with a room key. A member of staff may escort your therapist, or you may need to meet her in the lobby.

Because our therapists wear the brown Soul Treats uniform, reception can see at once that she is a massage therapist on a booked visit, which usually makes these checks quick.

How do I make my therapist's arrival smooth?

Send us the name the room is booked under and your room number, and let reception know you are expecting a massage therapist from Soul Treats. That one step means the front desk can send her straight up rather than calling your room first.

Before she arrivesWhy it helps
Send the booking name and room numberReception checks both before giving directions
Tell the front desk to expect a visitorSaves a call to your room and a wait at the desk
Keep your phone closeReception or your therapist may call when she arrives
Check if the lift needs a key cardYou may need to meet her in the lobby
Prepare the roomA comfortable temperature, a clean bed and a little quiet

Do hotels charge a fee for visitors?

Hotels do not normally charge a guest because a massage therapist visits during the day or evening. Some hotels have rules about visitors staying overnight, but a massage visit of 60 to 120 minutes is a normal daytime or evening visit. If your hotel has a specific policy, reception will tell you when you mention you are expecting a therapist.

What about serviced apartments and condos?

Serviced apartments work much like hotels, with a front desk that registers visitors. Condos are usually stricter: visitors often sign in with security and may exchange an ID card for a visitor pass, and lifts are almost always key-card controlled. Our guide to home massage at your condo covers condo security in detail.

What happens once she reaches my room?

Your therapist knocks, introduces herself and agrees the pressure and focus areas with you. She brings the oils and balm, and the massage takes place on your own bed, so there is nothing to set up. For traditional Thai massage you wear loose, comfortable clothing; for oil treatments you stay covered by the bed sheet throughout, apart from the area being worked on. Our guide to in-room massage in your Bangkok hotel walks through the whole session.

Frequently asked questions

Do Bangkok hotels allow massage therapists to visit rooms?

Most do. Reception usually asks the therapist for the guest's name and room number, and some hotels record ID or call the room before sending her up. A few hotels with in-house spas prefer guests to use them, so if you are unsure, ask the front desk when you check in.

Why does reception want my therapist's ID?

Many Bangkok hotels log every visitor for security, and some keep an ID card at the desk until the visitor leaves. It is the hotel's own procedure, applies to all visitors, and our therapists are used to it.

What if my hotel lift needs a key card?

Then a member of staff may escort your therapist, or you can come down to the lobby to meet her. When we confirm the arrival time, plan to be near your phone so you can head down if reception calls.

Should I tell reception I booked a massage?

Yes, it helps. A quick word with the front desk, saying you are expecting a massage therapist from Soul Treats at a certain time, means reception can send her straight up instead of calling your room first.

Do you visit serviced apartments as well as hotels?

Yes. We visit hotels, serviced apartments, condos and homes across central Bangkok every day from noon to 3am, usually about 40 minutes after booking, with no travel charge within 7 km of Sukhumvit Soi 22.
